Banger vs. Nail Rigs: A Brief Guide

If you’re new to the smoking scene, visiting one of our smoke shops in South Florida can be, admittedly, overwhelming.

Our shelves, walls, and cases are lined with spoon pipes, water pipes, grinders, rolling papers, and other smoking accessories – including dab rigs, which are popular and only becoming more popular with the spread of the practice of vaporizing concentrates.

On the other hand, if you’ve been at this a while, you might be wondering where all the nail rigs have gone. They are being replaced by a (dare we say) superior type of rig known as a banger.

Let’s take a look at what this all means, and why most dab riggers nowadays prefer the modern banger as an alternative to the classic nail rig.

What Makes Concentrates So Popular

Dabbing, the process of vaporizing a “dab” of concentrates, is an effective, economical way to vaporize herb concentrates. Concentrates are powerful, clean, and discrete, too.

Probably the most popular way to vaporize concentrates is with a dab rig. Traditionally, users could improvise a method for vaporizing concentrates or use a commercially available solution known as a nail rig.

How a Nail Rig Works

A nail rig is basically a modified water pipe that has a (typically titanium) nail in place of a glass bowl. Basically, you heat the nail with a torch or coil, allow it to come to an appropriate temperature, and then dab a bit of oil or concentrate on the nail with a dab tool.

The nail will vaporize the oil or concentrates, which can then be inhaled through the water pipe.

Nail rigs are effective, and titanium nails are effectively indestructible. Titanium nails are also fairly affordable, but despite these advantages, there are a number of drawbacks to the classic “nail rig.”

Using a titanium nail rig could be very messy and imprecise, and if that weren’t bad enough, it takes a bit of skill to get it right. Titanium nails also were likely to transfer a less than pleasant flavor to your oils or concentrates, so if savoring the “true terpenes” of a blend is what you’re after, that’s another drawback to the nail rig.

As a result of these considerations, there is a modern alternative that has all but replaced the classic nail rig: it is called a banger, and it is superior to the nail rig in more ways than we have yet mentioned.

How a Banger Works

Like a dab rig that uses a metal nail, a banger rig also uses a water pipe to inhale the vaporized oil or concentrates. However, instead of a nail, a banger rig uses a small glass attachment that looks something like a bowl or bucket.

These “bangers” are special inserts that are compatible with water pipes and are available in various male and female sizes, including standard sizes such as 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm, as well as others.

Bangers, like nails, can be made of metal, but they are typically made of ceramic, quartz, or glass, just like the bowl of a water pipe would be.

The process for using a banger rig is similar to that used by a nail rig, but much easier and more straightforward. The banger is inserted into the water pipe, and then heated, either with a torch or an electric coil.

When it reaches the proper temperature, a dab of concentrates or a drop of oil is dropped into the banger. On contact with the hot surface of the banger, the concentrates or oil will vaporize, and can then be inhaled. Some dab rig “operators” place a special carb cap over the banger after the oil or concentrates vaporize in order to effectively capture them before inhalation.

Benefits of Banger Dab Rigs Compared to Nail Rigs

Other than the fact that titanium nails are easier to clean and generally more affordable than bangers, bangers offer a number of pronounced advantages.

Both glass and ceramic bangers are relatively affordable and durable (though not as much as a metal nail) and are resistant to cracking due to high temperatures.

Quartz and glass bangers are also relatively easy to clean and won’t transfer any flavors to the vapors, so you can enjoy a cleaner, purer experience when dabbing with them.

Most importantly, however, the main benefits of bangers instead of nails have to do with how much less effort and skill it takes to use them. It takes a good deal of trial and error to “get it right” with a nail rig, and almost none with a banger.

With a banger, you just heat it up, drop in the concentrates or oil, carb it, and rip. It’s very user-friendly and effective, less difficult to “figure out,” and unlikely to create a mess. There are a wide variety of different carb caps that can be used with bangers to help capture the vapor and provide thicker hits.

Additionally, banger rigs, especially those that are compatible with electric coils, are precise and efficient. Unlike the use of a torch (which some dabbers still use anyway) coils will heat up the banger to a very precise temperature before concentrates are applied, delivering a consistent vaping experience every time.

While both nail rigs and banger rigs are highly effective (in the right hands) for vaporizing concentrates and oils, banger rigs are more beginner-friendly, and effective, and will impart no flavors into your preferred concentrates.

Are Glass Pipes Good to Smoke Out of? And Other Questions Answered

Just like the Internet does, we field a lot of questions every week. Many of our customers know exactly what they’re looking for, but others have questions, and that’s alright. That’s what we’re here for.

One of the most common questions we hear in our smoke shop in Fort Lauderdale (and elsewhere) has to do with glass – such as if it’s alright to smoke out of glass.

But there are others. Here are some common ones, along with some words of wisdom.

Are Glass Pipes Good to Smoke Out of?

First off, yes. The short answer to this is obvious, but there are some more layers of detail we could get into if we wanted.

To keep it short and simple, yes, it is safe (and practical) to smoke out of glass pipes. That is expressly the reason that so many pipes are made of glass.

If you’re new to this, though, it’s important to realize that glass actually has some distinct advantages over other materials that are commonly used to make pipes.

Traditional smoking pipes are typically made with briar, meerschaum, corn cob, or clay. Glass has advantages over nearly every one of these.

Briar and corn cob pipes must be broken in slowly and incrementally or else the bowls will burn through, ruining the pipes. Glass, which does not burn, will not suffer this problem.

Meerschaum (a white mineral that looks like chalk, also known as magnesium silicate) and clay also will not burn, so they don’t need to be broken in. They share this feature with glass. However, they are much more fragile than glass, and unlike glass, they are porous and so they will absorb flavors. Glass will not.

In that sense, glass is actually superior to these traditional media. Unlike all of them, glass is not porous and will not flavor your herbs or tobacco. Glass is also physically more durable than corn cob, meerschaum, and clay. Unlike corn cob and briar, glass does not need to be broken in.

With a glass pipe, you can smoke a full bowl out of the gate with no break-in period, and you also don’t need to worry about the glass flavoring the experience or harboring any residual flavors.

One more thing: glass is clear, so it’s easy to see when your pipe needs to be cleaned.

What Are Glass Pipes Called? [Different Types of Glass Pipes]

If you’ve never smoked out of a glass pipe before, come down to our smoke shop in Fort Lauderdale to get a taste of just how much variety you can find in glass smoking pipes!

Some of the more popular types of glass smoking pipes are:

  • Spoon pipes: Tiny, handheld glass pipes that have a short, thick stem and a round, typically wide bowl are known as spoons – because that’s exactly what they look like.
  • Chillums: Chillums are basically a cylinder of glass with a thin stem and an open end that can be packed with herbs or tobacco. A smaller version of a chillum is known as a one-hitter.
  • Water pipes: Water pipes consist of a chamber that holds water, into which is inserted a bowl which is then packed with herbs or tobacco. The top of the chamber is open and tapers off to a chimney. These pipes cool off and filter the smoke and enable smokers to take big hits called rips.

In addition to these, there is a wide range of other glass pipes that are similar and could be categorized under one of those other broader groups. For instance, there are also water rigs (similar to water pipes) and hammer pipes, and sherlock pipes (similar to spoons).

If you’re interested in learning any more about these, give us a call or come visit us in one of our smoke shops!

What Features Affect How a Glass Pipe Smokes?

Not all glass smoking pipes are created equal, so there are a few things you should look for when choosing one.

First, make sure you only ever buy a glass smoking pipe made from borosilicate glass. This glass is tougher than soda lime glass and has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion so it’s more resistant to high temperatures.

Also, consider the size of a bowl. You don’t need a huge bowl but get a pipe with a bowl that’s large enough not to annoy you. You don’t want to have to refill the bowl after every hit or two, and some pipes are made with small bowls.

If you’re getting a spoon, consider getting a spoon with a carburetor, or “carb,” that will enable you to control the rate of airflow. This will allow you to meter the burn rate within the bowl and produce more powerful hits.

Also, consider the length of the stem. One of the complaints about glass pipes is that they smoke hot, and there is some merit to that complaint. All else being equal, the longer the stem, the cooler the smoke will be before it gets to your mouth.

If you’re getting a water pipe and love a cool smoke, consider getting one of the models, that has a special chamber for ice or an ice pinch in the chimney. You can place ice in the chimney which will really cool the smoke off before it gets to you.

If you’re getting a glass pipe to keep on you when you’re on the go, consider a pipe that is small and doesn’t have any thin or small parts. Glass smoking pipes are tough but they can still break if not properly cared for.

Advice from Your Smoke Shop in Fort Lauderdale, FL: Glass Pipe Care 101

Whether your favorite smoking implement is an elaborate masterpiece of heady glass or a simple, one-hitter chillum, the way you care for it will not only impact the smoking experience but how long your glass lasts.

Now let’s specifically talk about the care of glass water pipes – especially ornate heady glass specimens that are pieces of art.

Oftentimes these have fine, fragile parts. Special care and attention are in order to protect them.

Here’s what you need to know, from your smoke shop in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Keeping It Clean
If you want to fully enjoy the smoking experience as thoroughly as possible, and you want your heady glass to look its best, and not like a stained mess, keeping it clean is imperative.

While cleaning a water pipe is a little more involved than cleaning a spoon pipe or a chillum, it’s not as intimidating as it needs to be.

The first thing you need to do is carefully remove the bowl and downstem from the water pipe and set them aside, along with any other fragile glass parts that can potentially get damaged.

Then, dump out the old, dirty water. If you want to keep your heady glass in tip-top shape, do this after every smoke.

Once you’ve dumped out the old, go in with the new. Warm up some tap water, and rinse out the water pipe. Give it a few good rinses to dissolve some of the oils and tar that can be easily rinsed away.

Then, it’s time to use a cleaning solution. There are specially designed cleaning solutions that you can use for water pipes, and some of them are very effective, but we’re not going to tell you that you need to use these. You can just as easily make your own at home.

There are two popular options for improvised cleaning solutions. One is a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and rock salt, and the other is a mixture of vinegar with a little bit of baking soda.

Both isopropyl alcohol and white vinegar are fairly effective at dissolving tar and oil deposits, but isopropyl is probably the more effective of the two.

As for the rock salt and baking soda, respectively, these are each very abrasive and can help to scrub off the deposits inside the water pipe.

Whichever solution you use, pour it into the water chamber and let it sit for a few minutes. Next, you need to cover up the opening to the water pipe. You can use your hands, rags, or paper towels, but there are also special silicone covers you can buy for the purpose.

Then, you need to shake things up – literally. Vigorously shake the water pipe to work the salt/alcohol or vinegar/baking soda solution inside. This will bring the abrasive mixtures into contact with the walls and chimney, helping to scrub off the tar.

If your water pipe was exceptionally dirty, after a few shakes, pour out the old solution, rinse with water, and then add a fresh cleaning solution. Repeat the process until the glass of your water pipe is clear inside and out.

Smoke Shop in Fort Lauderdale, FL

Sometimes there are rings or deposits that won’t come out by shaking and need particular attention. To dislodge these, you’ll need the help of a pipe brush that can reach down through the chimney or through the bowl.

Once you’ve removed all stains and marks, pour out the cleaning solution, rinse the water pipe out with fresh water, and place it somewhere safe to dry!

The final step is to clean the bowl and downstem. You can use the same alcohol/salt or vinegar/baking soda solutions to clean these. Soak them for a few minutes in a container of your solution and then use a pipe brush or a toothbrush to clean them off. When clean, rinse with warm, clean water and place with the water pipe to dry.

Preventing Mold and Water Stains
Water stains and mold stains arise for different reasons, but they are unsightly and can adversely affect the aesthetic enjoyment of a heady glass pipe.

The best way to deal with water stains and mold stains is not to remove them, but to prevent them. Water stains arise from mineral deposits; to prevent these, use only filtered water in your glass pipe and while cleaning.

As for mold stains, these occur when you leave water in the bowl for too long and allow mold to bloom. They’re very hard to clean and extremely unsightly.

There are ways you can remove them – but don’t get hung up on that. Prevent them in the first place so you never have a problem. A good rule of thumb is to change your water pipe’s water every day and give it a thorough cleaning every week, whether you think you need to or not.

Safe Storage

Smoke Shop in Fort Lauderdale, FL
In addition to mold and water stains, there is another unique risk facing specimens of fragile, heady glass, and it is breakage.

We know you love your finest pieces, but don’t leave them out on low tables where they’re at risk of being knocked over and shattered.

Keep them somewhere safe and elevated. That will help prevent them from inadvertent bumps that could break them and will put them on a pedestal where all can enjoy the scenery.

The Ultimate Guide to Finding the Best Smoke Shop Near Me

Have you ever asked yourself while in a place far from home, “Where is the best smoke shop near me?” Well, we certainly have. In fact, we at The Hip Cat Smoke Shop have been in your shoes on multiple occasions, so we can help.

Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of factors to consider when choosing the best of the best smoke shops nearby. Distance is a major factor, of course, but what else is important to take into account? Should you consider the products? What about the products’ materials? Their prices? Accessibility? Customer service and reviews? There are a plethora of aspects you need to consider when you are in an unfamiliar place and need to find the greatest smoke shop nearby.

If you are in Fort Lauderdale or Pompano Beach in Florida state, then we got you covered. Come check out our endless options for your smoking needs, from papers and lighters to vaporizers and bubblers, we got you covered.

If you aren’t, not a problem! Below is our guide for the best practices for locating the best smoke shop in your area.

Conducting an Online Search via Google Maps
Now, this step may be the most obvious one: conduct a Google search. Use the power of the “best smoke shop near me” phrase by putting it in the search bar and seeing what happens. The browser will ask if it can access and use your location, which you should accept. Accepting this will lead to the most accurate and best results. Now what you need to do is to check out the Google Maps result at the top of the search results page.

You can already start narrowing down your options from here. The Google Map result allows you to filter a specific area and smoke shops by:
●Top rated

●Within five miles

●Distance

●Open now

You can investigate any one of the above options by clicking on them (either one or all at once), but we recommend first clicking on the map itself to get even more options with a wider and more readable view.

Now that you’re in Google Maps on the browser, you can more closely see exactly where the closest smoke shops are and how far it will take for you to get to each one. Note that you can also conduct this research in the Google Maps app. From Google Maps, whether it’s the app or in a browser, you can see a few red pins with white shopping bag symbols near your blue circle (your current location).

Now you have your nearest options laid out in front of you. You can further fiddle with the filters. Filter by “top rated” in order to see the most popular and highest rated places. You also have the option to click “within five miles,” “sort by distance,” and “open now.” You could even click all of these options if you wanted to do so!

Alongside these automatic filters is “more filters.” There, you can designate just how far you’re willing to go in terms of distance. Maybe you need to walk there and aren’t exactly willing to go five miles. You can adjust this setting to 0.5, 1, or 20 miles. “Any” is also a possibility if distance isn’t really an issue.

Maybe ratings are at the forefront of your mind in selecting the best smoke shop. Try “rating at least,” which allows you to view shops with at least 3.5, 4.0, or even 4.5 stars. You could even adjust “open now” by selecting any, 24 hours, or custom.

Using the Google Maps app does provide a few extra filter options for your search than the regular browser search. You can select places you have already visited or haven’t yet visited. You could potentially sort by relevance instead of distance as well, if distance isn’t too big of a factor for you.

Another important factor to consider here is the area’s safety. If you’re unsure of how safe your location is, investigate this further using a separate Google search or even by investigating some Facebook groups (more on those later). We want you to get what you’re looking for in a smoke shop no matter where you are, but we also don’t want you to put yourself at risk to get it. It’s not worth it.

Once you have applied all of the appropriate filters depending on your specific situation and you’re confident it’s a safe area, take a look at the revised map. Here are the best smoke shops available in your preferred area…so far.

Comparing Smoke Shops
Hopefully, your advanced search has rid of a good portion of unacceptable shops for you, and you won’t have to compare and contrast too many going forward. One of the more obvious next steps is to click each individual shop on the map to investigate it further.

When you do, have a look at all the categories available to you. You can see their hours and if they’re currently open. You also have the option to view photos and reviews. These are two of the most important parts of this search because if they don’t have any photos or reviews, then they may not be worth the trek.

Photos and reviews are an integral part in the selection process not only when the business doesn’t have them, but also when they do have them. Maybe the photos show all of their products, or they provide clarity that they don’t have what you’re looking for. Photos could even potentially show a list of prices for quick reference.

Reviews and ratings are one of your greatest assets, so be sure to investigate these almost immediately. They can provide you with authentic experiences previous customers had, so you can differentiate between if a shop is worth investigating or not.

However, please be wary of some online reviews. Some are fabricated because companies and businesses pay people to write reviews for them, as they are aware of how important they are to potential customers. Fake reviews often have one or more of these qualities:

●Obscure formatting and spacing

●Very poor spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.

●Overly dramatic optimism for the shop and/or its products

●Oddly abrupt and generic comments

If the shop appears to have a decent amount of authentic and positive reviews and ratings, then they are more likely to be trustworthy and worthy of your business. After all, you are looking for the best smoke shops near me, not the “somewhat okay smoke shops near me!”

Once you have narrowed your list down to the most trustworthy of businesses, you can have a perusal through their websites. Have a look at their products to better distinguish if they can offer you what you need.

Consider the product or products you’re looking for. If you’re looking for a bubbler, do they have them in the sizes and types you require? Are they made of the same material you want? If you’re looking for a specific type of tobacco, do they have it?

After deliberating between all of these many options and using all of the filters that apply to you, hopefully you have narrowed it down to a very small amount of smoke shops to choose from. However, your search isn’t over just yet. There are a few other steps you should take to finding the absolute best.

Social Media
Social media can further assist you in narrowing down your search. It can provide you with more up-to-date information on the smoke shops you have lined up.

Social Media Accounts
Many businesses now, including smoke shops, enjoy posting their newest offerings, products, services, and even sales and giveaways on their social media accounts. You won’t want to miss any of these!

We suggest investigating their Facebook and Instagram accounts first and foremost. On Facebook, they may have updated hours, events, and other fun posts. On Instagram, you can see even more photos and videos than you might have seen anywhere else in your search.

Social media accounts could also pose as a business’ primary source of contact. If you have a particular question about a product, the shop, location, or really anything, you might be able to message them there and get a quick response. You could always call them, of course, but if you’re not in a particular situation where you can call them, then sending a direct message via Instagram or Facebook is a great option.

Their social media accounts can also provide more clarity on other concerns, like reviews, ratings, and overall customer satisfaction and feedback. Some customers may still rate and review businesses on Yelp or other websites, which you might have seen during your Google search, but a lot more people are heading to social media to post their reviews and experiences.

Social media accounts can provide you with more clarification on the nearby smoke shops’ hours as well. They may say that they’re open on Google, but if there is an emergency and they close early or they’re observing a holiday that they didn’t inform Google about, that could really throw you for a loop. Some businesses prefer to simply update their customers via social media.

Hashtags
You can also use social media in another manner: hashtags. If you head to Facebook, Instagram, or even Twitter, you could peruse unlimited applicable hashtags. For example, if you are in New York City, you could search for “#nycsmokeshop” to find cool smoke shops in the city along with accounts, locations, photos, videos, and much more. You could try plenty of hashtag variations to yield the most results.

Word of Mouth
Getting reviews of places from people in the area is always a great way to find the best businesses nearby. Through word of mouth, you can find the “best kept secret” smoke shops that maybe Google doesn’t quite know about yet.

If you can ask people in your area directly, this wouldn’t be a bad idea. If possible, ask friends or family members for any suggestions they might have. If that’s not a viable option, you could even walk to nearby shops or corner stores and ask them about the best smoke shops nearby. It can’t hurt to get a local’s recommendation!

Facebook Groups
Facebook groups are one of our favorite ways to get more real insight on nearly any topic from local like-minded folk. Hop onto Facebook and search for smoke shop groups or anything similar in your area. There will undoubtedly be more than a few options there.

You might have to wait to be accepted into the group, which never takes long. Once you’re into a group, you can search within it for the best smoke shops near me. It’s highly likely someone has already asked the same question.

If that doesn’t yield enough results, keep playing around in the search bar and something will come up for you. You can find really great results this way.

If you don’t find enough relevant results that way, don’t be shy: post your own question! Ask the group members, “What’s the best smoke shop near me, guys?” along with your generic location and specifically what you’re looking for from a smoke shop, then see what people suggest for you.

Another great way to use Facebook groups is if you do happen to already find a smoke shop you’d like to try out, but you want some more information on it from locals. You can simply search a group or a few groups for that one smoke shop and see what people are saying about it.

Facebook groups are great for learning more particulars about a place, including safety. Google results won’t typically tell you a place is not really safe to visit except possibly in reviews from previous customers. Facebook groups, however, often provide this information for you.

It isn’t easy to find smoke shops when you are traveling or in an unfamiliar place, but if you use this guide, you will surely find them. There are plenty of unique, quirky, and fun smoke shops out there. Don’t be afraid to try as many as you can!

Hey South Florida, We are the Best Glass Head Shop Near You

Have you ever spent hours on the internet looking for things like ” Best Glass Head Shops Near Me“? We have fantastic news for you. Let out that sigh of relief, you have found our shop.

Whether you are looking for a brand new pipe or you are interested in buying your first pipe, we are here to help. When you are searching for the “best glass head shop near me” online, usually you are trying to find not only a store with a great selection, but also staff that know what they are talking about.

Glass Quality
The first thing that you should consider when looking at any glass shop is their selection. Far too many shops are filled with a sparse selection of cheap glass. While these pipes will definitely smoke, low quality glass is far more likely to break and leave you without a pipe. A lot of the inexpensive pipes that you see are manufactured overseas and the name of the game is quantity and not quality. This means that imperfections in the glass are often overlooked.

If you want glass that is built to last, you need to look at pipes that have been made by professionals. Glass artists will go over every inch of their finished pieces to make sure that no bubbles or poor connections will jeopardize the integrity of the pipe.

One of the first things that will draw your eyes when you walk into either of our stores will be the cases and cases of glass pipes. We are dedicated to sourcing quality glass for our customers, and glass enthusiasts will be sure to see pipes from a few makers that they recognize.

Whether you are looking for a heady water pipe or a simple spoon, you will be blown away by the number of options that we have available.

Not All Glass Head Shops are the Same
Smoke shops are not all going to be places dedicated to offering great glass. A lot of time a place will consider themselves a smoke shop if they sell tobacco products and have a shelf of cheap glass pipes. That’s why its important to do your homework.

Obviously if you are looking for a great smoke shop in South Florida, we would recommend checking out our shops!

One of the best ways to find a smoke shop, and possibly what led you here in the first place, is to search for the “Best Glass Head Shops Near Me” online.

Without a doubt, a quality glass pipe is an investment because they are one of the best smoking options out there.

Why Smoke with Glass Pipes?
For the most part, glass is the most popular material for smoking because it’s the cleanest option available. Glass is virtually inert, meaning it does not readily react with anything. This is why glass is used in laboratory settings and why it makes such good pipes. Unlike wood or metal pipes, glass will not add any taste to the smoke.

But not all glass is the same. The glass that your pipes are made of is not the same as the glass that is used to make windows. Instead, the glass used to make pipes and laboratory equipment is borosilicate glass, the same material that is used to make glass baking dishes. This glass expands less when heated, which means that it can handle the high temperatures of smoking with ease.

Pipes made of wood will add a burnt taste to your smoke, which is not always desired. Metal pipes are also a common option because they are virtually indestructible, but they definitely impart an “off” taste to smoke. Metal also holds heat well and these pipes have narrow chambers. These two factors means that extended use can cause built up resin to remain warm in the pipe until it becomes a liquid, which can be a nasty surprise for anyone smoking when they go to inhale from a warm pipe. Glass pipes hold heat poorly and have large internal chambers, helping everything to cool down quickly. When it comes to choosing which glass pipe is right for you, that is where we can help.

A well made water pipe is an investment in your smoking experience and if you love to smoke, then you need to get yourself one.

One of the most common questions that we hear is which water pipe we recommend. While we wish there was a great one size fits all option, water pipes are as varied as the people who use them. The easiest way to get an idea for the types of pipes that will work best for you is to try as many different types of pipes as possible. For new smokers this might not be the easiest option, but there are a few general rules for choosing a good pipe.

The first thing to consider is size. Now you might think that bigger pipe equals a bigger hit, but this is not always the case. You can hit a smaller pipe for a long time and still get a massive hit of smoke. They also make great dab rigs. The biggest difference is draw resistance and how fast you can clear smoke from the pipe comfortably. Large pipes will also give the smoke more room to cool before it is inhaled, which can help make smoking a lot more comfortable.

Once you know how much water pipe you need, it’s time to take a look at how that pipe functions. The most basic water pipes will usually have a downstem that goes into water. Smoke travels down this stem and bubblers through the water, which helps to cool the smoke and remove some of the water soluble compounds in the smoke. This makes using a water pipe significantly easier than smoking a dry pipe for most smokers.

Some more advanced pipes will use percolators that are more complex than just a downstem. These percolators are usually designed to diffuse the smoke into a larger number of smaller bubbles in order to increase its surface area and cool things down even more. In order to provide multiple stages of cooling and filtration, some pipes will pass smoke through multiple percolators. Each time the smoke passes through water it will become cooler and smoother, though each additional percolator will add draw resistance and make the pipe more difficult to clear.
